Why Is My Oven Timer Not Working?
Ovens have become far more complex than they once were. Today, they include a multitude of features to make cooking easier. Unfortunately, the more features an appliance has, the more that can go wrong. The timer on your oven is a very handy feature. Especially if you have the tendency to forget how long you have baked or roasted something for. If the timer on your oven stops working, however, it can prevent your whole oven from working. Failure To Set The Clock
If the power has recently gone out, this would have reset all the clocks in your home, including your oven clock. When the time is not set on the oven clock, it may not work. Faulty Electronic Control Board
This is one of the most common problems and you should see an error code on the small screen. If you do not see an error code, you will need to check if the elements are receiving power. This is not a job for an unqualified or inexperienced individual since live voltage testing is involved. In addition, specialised equipment is required to conduct such tests. If there is no power to the elements, the next step is to check the power output relay of the control board. If this test reveals that there is no power output, the control board will need to be replaced.
Power Problems
If you are having problems with your power supply or outlet, it can be the cause of your oven timer problems. The first thing you will need to do is disconnect your oven from the power source. Make sure that you disconnect the relevant breaker or fuse first! Once the oven has been unplugged and removed from all sources of power, you can turn the breaker back on. Now you need to test the power outlet. You can do this easily, and without any specialised equipment, by simply plugging in another small device (like a toaster) to the power outlet. If it works, then there is no fault with the outlet. If it doesn't work, then you know that there might not be any problem with your oven at all.
Terminal Block Fault
If the terminal block is faulty or not receiving power, it can be the cause of the problem. This part is located on the back of the oven and you can inspect it for visible damage yourself. You will need to disconnect the power to the oven before you begin. Once you locate the terminal block, you can inspect the wires before turning the breaker or fuse back on for a short period of time to check the terminal for power. This is, actually, a job best left to professionals due to the delicate nature of electronic and electric faults. If the terminal block is not receiving power, there could be a general electrical issue in your home.
Faulty Oven Timer
Sometimes the problem is with the oven timer itself. In this case, the oven needs to be disconnected from the source of power before the relevant parts and panels can be removed to expose the back of the timer clock. Using an ohmmeter, the terminals of the fuse can be tested to determine continuity. If there is none, the clock will need to be replaced. Again, this is a job best left to the professionals.
