Washer Won’t Agitate

Investigate the Cause of the Problem

The agitator is the core component of a top-loading washing machine that agitates and transports the clothes through the water during the wash cycle. The agitator is secured in place with the output shaft of the transmission splined to it. With regular usage, some of the components of the agitator can wear down or break, causing your washing machine not to agitate. Transmission failure is another reason the washer won’t agitate but will spin. The transmission assists in moving the agitator back and forth. If the input shaft spins but the agitator does not, the transmission may need to be changed. The timer is one of the components that controls the drive motor, which in turn drives the agitator. The timer powers the motor so it may spin up and move in the correct direction. If there is no continuity in the movement of the timer, it may be why the agitator is not working. Another component that may go unnoticed during this scenario is the lid switch. When you close the top-loading washer’s lid, the lid switch activates and begins the wash cycle. If the washer won’t agitate but spins, there’s a possibility that it’s due to a faulty drive motor. The motor drives the transmission, which causes the agitator to vibrate. It’s difficult to diagnose a bad drive motor and should be handled by an expert.
